About Laura Bergner, PhD

Laura Bergner, PhD

Research Associate at the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health & Comparative Medicine, University of Glasgow

Laura Bergner is a Research Associate at the University of Glasgow Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health & Comparative Medicine and the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research in Glasgow, Scotland. She received her PhD from the University of Glasgow in 2018.

Dr Bergner is broadly interested in the ecology and evolution of wildlife and their pathogens, and the ways in which human activities alter these dynamics. Her research makes use of primarily molecular tools, along with field studies, bioinformatics, and ecological and evolutionary analyses. During her PhD studying viral communities in common vampire bats, Dr Bergner discovered two bat-associated deltaviruses related to Hepatitis delta virus. While her research is currently focused elsewhere, she remains interested in animal deltavirus evolutionary history and evaluating barriers to the zoonotic transmission of animal satellite viruses.
